Hours & Directions

The outdoor areas of Duke Gardens are open every day of the year from 8 a.m. until dusk during construction of the Garden Gateway.

The outdoor areas of Duke Gardens are open during construction of the Garden Gateway project, but the main entrance on Anderson Street, the Gardens parking lots and the Doris Duke Center are closed.

Visitors may enter Duke Gardens on foot through the temporary pedestrian entrance at 2000 Lewis Street and through the garden gates leading to West Campus along Flowers Drive.

Public parking is available to visitors on weekends only in the nearby Duke University H lot, located on Anderson Street and Yearby Avenue.  Visitors are strongly encouraged to visit Duke Gardens on weekends when public parking is available or use alternative means of transportation.

Admission is free thanks to the generosity of our members and donors. While Duke University Parking & Transportation charges $2 per hour for parking, there is no admission fee to enter.

Public parking is available to visitors on weekends only in the nearby Duke University H lot, located on Anderson Street and Yearby Avenue.  Visitors are strongly encouraged to visit Duke Gardens on weekends when public parking is available or use alternative ways of getting here.

Walking

Duke Gardens has multiple walk-in entrances for visitors walking from Duke’s campus, bus stops or other nearby locations, including the new temporary pedestrian entrance located at 2000 Lewis St.

By Bike or Scooter

There are bike racks at the Lewis Street pedestrian entrance, and bike lock loops in the stone wall outside the Memorial Gate on Flowers Drive. Scooters must be parked at bike racks.

Duke Campus buses (free) and GoDurham and GoTriangle buses all have stops at or near Duke Gardens entrances.

By Rideshare

During construction, the street address for the temporary entrance is 2000 Lewis St., Durham, N.C., 27705. You may exit your rideshare at the former bus stop on Anderson St. directly across from Lewis Street entrance.

Driving

Public parking is available on weekends only during construction of the Garden Gateway. On the weekend, visitors may park in the Duke University H lot, located on Anderson Street and Yearby Avenue. There is no weekday parking during construction.

From Chapel Hill & points southwest via 15/501

  • 15/501 North toward Durham
  • merge right onto 15/501 Bypass
  • exit onto Hwy. 751 (a.k.a. Cameron Blvd.)
  • turn right at bottom of exit ramp onto Hwy. 751
  • proceed on Hwy. 751 to third stop light
  • turn left onto Duke University Road
  • follow Duke University Road to second stop light
  • turn left onto Anderson Street
  • after first two intersections (Campus Drive and Lewis Street), the H Lot entrance is on the left. Look for the raised gate. The H Lot may also be accessed on Yearby Avenue.

From Raleigh & points south and east via I-40 and Hwy. 147 (Durham Freeway)

  • I-40 west to Hwy. 147 (Durham Freeway)
  • follow Hwy. 147 to the Swift Avenue exit
  • turn left onto Swift Avenue
  • pass one traffic light and proceed to Campus Drive (a four-way stop)
  • turn right onto Campus Drive.
  • proceed to first stop light and turn right onto Anderson Street
  • after first two intersections (Campus Drive and Lewis Street), the H Lot entrance is on the left. Look for the raised gate. The H Lot may also be accessed on Yearby Avenue.

From Greensboro & points west via I-85

  • I-85 North to Durham
  • exit onto Hillandale Road
  • turn right at the top of exit ramp onto Hillandale Road
  • continue on Hillandale, which will merge with Fulton Street at the Hwy. 147 overpass
  • proceed on Fulton Street to the Erwin Road intersection
  • turn left on Erwin Road
  • proceed to second stop light
  • turn right onto Anderson Street
  • at the first intersection (Yearby Avenue), turn right. The H Lot is on the left. The H lot may also be accessed on Anderson Street.

From points north and east via I-85

  • I-85 South to Durham
  • exit at Hillandale Road
  • turn left at the top of the exit ramp onto Hillandale Road
  • continue on Hillandale, which will merge with Fulton Street at the Hwy. 147 overpass
  • proceed on Fulton Street to the Erwin Road intersection
  • turn left on Erwin Road
  • proceed to second stop light
  • turn right onto Anderson Street
  • at the first intersection (Yearby Avenue), turn right. The H Lot is on the left. The H lot may also be accessed on Anderson Street.

Duke Campus buses are free. Please note that routes and schedules can change during university breaks, including summer.

  • The C1 and CSW/CSF stop at Campus Drive at Anderson Street is under 1/4 mile from Duke Gardens’ entrances.
  • The H1/H1T stop at Yearby Street at the H Lot (westbound only) and Trent Drive at Duke Clinic are under 1/4 mile from Duke Gardens’ entrances.
  • The LL and PR1 stop at Research Drive at Duke Clinic is under 1/4 mile from Duke Gardens’ entrances.
  • The SWS and C1 stop at Duke Chapel on West Campus is under 1/4 mile from Duke Gardens’ entrances.
