Parking at the Gardens

Enhance your visit to Duke Gardens by planning ahead and downloading the PayByPhone app.

Duke University Parking & Transportation charges $2/hour for campus parking at Duke Gardens from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.

Because Duke Gardens welcomes more 600,000 visitors per year, parking is limited and often fills to capacity before 10 a.m. on beautiful days. We encourage you to consider public transportation or rideshare options to avoid parking headaches.

Where to Park

If you plan to drive and park, please note that the main parking lots (Parking Lots 1 and 2 on the map) often fill to capacity by 10 a.m.

Once the main lots are full, you may park in one of the following overflow lots:

Campus Drive Lot (weekends only)

On weekends, overflow parking is also available in the Campus Drive Lot (3 on the map), on the corner of Anderson Street and Campus Drive. The PayByPhone zone for the Campus Drive lot is 3121, and PayByPhone is the only way to pay for this overflow option.

H Lot (peak season weekends only)

There is additional weekend overflow parking available during the spring visitation peak in the H Lot (4 on the map) adjacent to the Lewis Street daily overflow lot. Proceed to the far end of Lewis Street and enter the H Lot through the raised gate on the right. The PayByPhone zone is 11119, and PayByPhone is the only way to pay for this overflow option. You may enter the Gardens directly through the pedestrian gate at the bottom of Lewis Street or proceed to the Gardens’ main entrance, one block down the Anderson Street sidewalk.

How to Pay for Parking

The best way to pay for parking is to use Duke’s PayByPhone system.  We recommend that you download the mobile app and register for PayByPhone before leaving your home, as reception on site can be spotty. You will need to know your license plate number to complete your transaction.

In Duke Gardens Parking Lots 1 and 2

When you get to the Gardens, if you were able to find a space in parking lot 1 or 2, you have TWO options for paying for parking:

  • Use Duke’s PayByPhone app (Duke Garden’s Location number is 3109)
  • Pay with CASH at the University parking machine located in parking lot 2. Note that the machine only accepts cash, and it does not give change.
  • If you use the parking meter, you will have an option to print a receipt, but you do not need to place the receipt on your dashboard. If a machine is malfunctioning, please inform a volunteer or staff member or contact Duke University Parking & Transportation online or by phone at 919-684-7275.
