    This North Carolina State Natural Area is a gem, with a diversity of natural plant and animal communities not found anywhere else in the Triangle region. Join Paul Manos, Duke biology professor and Duke Herbarium curator, and Alec Motten, professor emeritus, Duke University Department of Biology, on a two- to three-mile mountain hike of moderate difficulty. Both Alec and Paul bring a deep expertise in plants and ecology; they will “read” the landscape and give you a unique view of Occoneechee Mountain. Please wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes. Bring a lunch and beverage to enjoy and continue the conversation after the hike.

  • Build a Bug Snug

    Support winter wildlife and re-purpose garden cuttings with a bug snug, an easy-to-make sculptural structure made of twigs and stems that provides a place for insects and invertebrates to overwinter.  Participants will work with Brooks Burleson, artisan and owner of Natural Stone Installation, to make a functional and attractive two-foot-tall structure to take home for your yard or garden. All materials provided.

    Plan your visit to include a stop in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden for this special opportunity to meet the keepers of the bees, chickens and incredible edible plants in this garden area beloved by learners of all ages. Look for horticulture staff or volunteers in Duke Gardens shirts and feel free to ask what they are doing.  Drop-in activity for all ages. Adult chaperone required for minors.

    Join us for a series of free demonstrations and workshops during the Festival of Fabulous Mums at Duke Gardens! In this session, learn the basics of floral design from retired floral designer Patty Stimell, who worked in Washington, D.C. as a designer for the British Embassy, the White House and Hillwood Museum and Gardens. Patty will demonstrate how to prepare a container for designing a floral centerpiece, as well as the proper way to condition flowers and foliage for longevity. This series of free demonstrations and workshops will take place in the Pelham-Cullen Classroom inside the Barnes Welcome Center. No registration required. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open 15 min before scheduled start time.
